Anni Albers, a leading figure in modern art and textile practice, described ‘the event of a thread’ as the moment when a single thread or idea takes shape, unfolding into a network of connections. This poetic idiom, which she likened to Paul Klee’s notion of ‘taking a line for a walk’, became a guiding principle in her work, an approach that treated weaving as a way of thinking through making.

Inspired by Albers’ vision of thread as a nexus of connection, The Event of a Thread brings together 20 emerging artists whose practices engage with textiles as a medium and an expanded field of artistic inquiry, responding to the complexities of contemporary experience.

Drawing on a woven logic, the exhibition explores how artists working through textiles illuminate the world’s entanglements. Spanning three gallery rooms and a foyer, the works unfold like a tapestry, interlacing surface and structure, body and memory, tradition and ritual.

Informed by diverse histories of labour, making, and exchange, including feminist, queer, and generational lineages, the exhibition reveals how textile processes and ideas create new forms of connection across cultural, material, and technological landscapes.
