Encounter
Sylvia Griffin, Pamela Leung, Juanita McLauchlan, Lisa Pang and Sue Pedley
8 November to 7 December 2024
(On Saturday 30 November the gallery will close at 4pm)
Encounter explores the intersections of personal, cultural, and historical narratives through diverse artistic practices, addressing themes of trauma, memory, identity, migration, colonization and environment.
Sylvia Griffin reinterprets historical sites through installations, using rubbings and endemic materials to reveal layers of history marked by cycles of habitation and reclamation. Her work, created during a residency in Gothenburg, captures the intangible qualities of spaces once used as epidemic hospitals.
Pamela Leung weaves together narratives of identity and community in relation to her birthplace of Hong Kong. She reflects on the realities of diaspora and the complexities of living between cultures. Her work explores the longing for connection amidst political upheaval in Hong Kong.
Juanita McLauchlan uses contact printing with Indigenous plants on blankets, layering her Gamilaraay heritage with contemporary expressions of belonging and connection to Country.
Lisa Pang combines traditional materials with family memories, merging art and craft to evoke reflections on mixed cultural heritage and familial rituals.
Sue Pedley delves into an historical encounter between Tasmanian convicts and Japanese samurai in 1830, as she investigates cultural collision and maritime history.
Together, these artists challenge viewers to reflect on their own narratives, prompting conversations about belonging, heritage, and the profound connections that shape our lives. Encounter invites audiences to engage with the layered stories woven into each artwork, fostering reflection and dialogue on the shared human experience.
Opening event Saturday 9 November, 2-4 pm
