Think Outside the Square Knitting Challenge

This term saw the launch of Think Outside the Square Knitting Challenge, the Year 11 Service Learning Project – and we have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and dedication with which the girls have taken to the task ahead of them.

Our “Think Outside the Square” knitting challenge will hopefully bring warmth, love and comfort to some of our community members in need.

Our blankets will be donated to local Penrith charities -  Mama Lana’s Community Foundation, The Haven Women’s Shelter and Westcare. The year 11 girls presented on these charities at Year Assembly a few weeks ago. The blankets will be sent to areas around Penrith, to both survivors of domestic violence and the homeless community, distributed alongside hot meals and groceries. The girls will have to consider the colour choice of their squares, as rough sleepers would prefer darker tones to not stand out, where as families who have experienced domestic violence would feel more uplifted by brighter colours.

So far, on our knitting ‘Leader board’, we have Olivia Lee and Brigid Milson on an incredible 16 squares, closely followed by Claire Adams, Sophia Baker and Ailee and her nan!   The knitting challenge is an amazing way for the girls to come together as a year group and everyone is very excited to see the loving, positive impact their squares will make on the wider community.

We aim to knit 1, 000 squares by July next year.  So far we are on 120! Watch this space.
