The Muffat Collective
In Term 3 we launched an Early Music residency with visiting ensemble The Muffat Collective. For classical musicians, the understanding of performance practices, style and historical instruments of the Baroque period is invaluable. The Muffat Collective is an Australian based ensemble who perform nationally and internationally on authentic 18th century instruments. All members studied at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague, Netherlands, which is the world's leading institute for period music practice, and they are currently sharing this expertise with our girls.
The Muffat Collective has been working with the Senior String Ensemble and HSC musicians throughout Term 3. They have been working on a program of Telemann, Vivaldi and Bach, which will be showcased at a concert on Wednesday 17 October.
The combined Abbotsleigh Chamber Choirs will join with male choristers, The Muffat Collective and Senior Strings to perform one of the great western art works 'Gloria' by Vivaldi at this concert. This piece was originally composed for a Venetian girls school, Ospedale della Pieta, where Vivaldi was a music teacher, priest and choir master. Just like Abbotsleigh, Ospedale prided itself on the quality of its music education. What a wonderful opportunity for our girls to perform with musicians of such calibre, hearing music as it would have been played, and connecting with the music that was played by teenage girls over 300 years ago.
