Middle School workshops
Our Middle School girls have been treated to a variety of experiences over the last week to enhance their learning at Abbotsleigh. Bamboo Theatre presented their 'Cybershorts' workshop to our Year 8 girls to help them understand appropriate social media practices and how to avoid the many pitfalls associated with online connections. Our girls were encouraged to make their profiles private and think very carefully about the photos that they post. The fact that so many girls stayed back after school asking questions of the presenters showed that the workshop was not only interesting but highly relevant.
Our Year 7 students and parents spent a worthwhile evening last week with Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Education Services (ELES). This session was well attended and provided some excellent tips for both students and parents, including the need in secondary school to do more than just the assigned homework to achieve academic success. The slides from Dr Salter's presentation are available on the Year 7 Virtual Classroom (password: achieve). Regardless of whether a student is in the Middle School or not, all girls and their parents can access the ELES study skills website by entering the following:

to deepen learning in this area.
Finally, our Year 7 girls were entertained with three plays about changes occurring to them as they transition to secondary school. This included the topics of puberty, positive relationships, cyberbullying and the safe use of social media. Again, there was lively discussion and many questions asked by the students, making it clear that the girls were engaged. Parents might like to chat with their daughters about some of the issues that were discussed in this workshop.
