Come and see our chooks at the Easter Show
Abbotsleigh's Ag Club has had a busy term raising broiler chickens and taking care of Light Sussex hens in preparation for the Sydney Royal Easter Show. After only 6 weeks, our little chicks grew from 46 grams to more than 3 kilograms in mass. The girls gained practical experience in handling, feeding, housing, cleaning sheds and monitoring growth. They also learned about the poultry industry in Australia, both eggs and meat.
You can see our birds in the Steggles Poultry Pavilion. The Light Sussex hens are exhibit 2320 and the broiler chickens are Steggles Meat Pairs exhibits 2113 and 2183. On Saturday, March 24, four students will be competing in the Junior Showmanship competition. They will demonstrate their handling skills, knowledge of husbandry and breed knowledge using our beautiful hens.
A larger group of girls will attend the Schools Program at the Show on 29 March. They will attend sessions such as Cheese & Dairy Appreciation, Dairy Farmers Working Dairy, Sheep Shearing, Yard Dog Demonstrations, Cattle Experience and the competition debrief for the Schools Competition. It promises to be a fun and educational experience for all.
We reported on the chickens when they first arrived. Read more about how their story began here.
