Abbotsleigh Voices at the Gondwana World Choral Festival

The Gondwana World Choral Festival, which celebrated the 30th anniversary of Sydney Children's Choir and Gondwana Voices, was held during the holidays from 15-21 July. The best youth choirs from around the world (including Toronto Children's Choir, Riga Cathedral Girls' Choir, Nagoya Youth Choir) performed all week at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Sydney Opera House. The Australian choirs kicked off the celebrations at the Sounds of Australia concert on Monday 15 July, with world premieres and works by Australian composers Paul Stanhope, Luke Byrne and Alice Chance to name a few.

We performed a joint concert with Guandong Experimental Middle School Choir (12 time champions of the World Choral Games) on Friday and also performed in the closing gala, 'Sounds of the World', at the Opera House on Sunday 21 July. There we joined singers from Estonia, France, China, Inner Mongolia, Latvia, Canada and Japan as well as choristers from around Australia, including PLC and SCEGGS Darlinghurst, to perform to an audience of more than 2,000.

The standard of the international choirs was jaw dropping. Our girls have come away inspired and motivated. They worked really hard and pulled together an excellent concert; we are very proud of our girls.

Special mention and thanks to our wonderful Abbotsleigh parents and students who hosted the Estonian Television Girls Choir, which is one of Europe's pre-eminent youth choirs. Rev Jenni Stoddart also hosted as she has Estonian relatives.

Please enjoy this video of the final two items.
