Abbotsleigh Champions at IGSSA Cross Country
Last Friday, 70 girls got up bright and early to head down to Frensham for IGSSA Cross Country. The energy was high on the bus with some pre-race nerves as the girls prepared for the big day ahead (of racing and cheering). The course at Frensham is deceptively challenging as it makes its way around the stunning grounds.
First up were the 12 years who fought hard and did exceptionally well for their first year on the course. The 13 years teams excelled with Zoe Banks (7) taking the win and the team placing first overall, with Sierra Timms (7) and Xanthe Cogan (8).
The 14 and 15 years were up soon after and raced brilliantly, with the 14s placing third overall. The 16 years was taken out by Nicola Hogg (10) who ran a smart race, which helped the 16 years team take the win – well done to Hannah Cerezo (10) and Clementine Flanery (10) on their placings too. The 17 years runners put on a stellar performance, as Rosie Fordham (11) led the Abbotsleigh girls in with 2nd place overall, and their team also going on to victory. Jessica Nagy (12) and Pascale La Hei (11) placed in the top ten of the 17 years race.
The final race of the day, the long 6 km, was won by Abbey Rockliff (12) which lifted the team, once again allowing her, Olivia Hogg (12) and Emily Phelps (12) to take first place as a team. The day ended with a bang with Abbostleigh being announced the overall champions and managing to hold the title much to the delight of the team.
It was a bittersweet victory for the Year 12s, having just completed their last IGSSA Cross Country. Our coaches and supporters were vital to our outstanding performance and we are so appreciative of what they do for us. Thanks to James ‘Jimbo’ Fitzgerald and Mr Everingham, in particular, for all their hard work.
