2018 Junior School AbbKart Derby

As part of the Year 6 Science and Mathematics program for Term 3, the girls have been supported in the planning and implementation of the engineering design process to create a billycart prototype in small groups. They learned how to use the tools and materials needed for making billycarts in the Senior School D&T classrooms. In Term 3, the girls learnt to work with wood, wheels, nuts and bolts; inventing and drawing sustainable carts with an eye to the big race at the end.

The girls also looked at simple machines like axles, the basics of Newton's laws of motion and measuring for their isometric and orthogonal plans, which they used to make their scaled prototypes.

To celebrate the completion of their prototypes, the billycarts they dismantled and reassembled from earlier in the term were raced around the Junior School lower oval in our annual AbbKart Derby! Team 11, Powersurge, were the overall winners, but a definite highlight was the teacher race. Well done to all the competitors.
