What a fantastic week of sporting performances we have seen from a range of Abbotsleigh teams. We have had a huge week in sport with students involved in a wide range of activities at various levels. From Wahroonga to Bowral, Olympic Park, Parramatta and Mittagong, Abbotsleigh has sent teams representing their House, school and at CIS level. Many hours of preparation by the girls have gone into some successful results. The depth of participation and performances at school level right through to State Championships shows the strength of the School across a range of sports. Our girls continue to show that by supporting and encouraging each other, working as a team at training and in competition, our overall results can be improved.

Full results of all the sports below can be viewed in a summary PDF document,  available to download at the base of this article.

Senior School Athletics Carnival

The School enjoyed fantastic weather for the 2017 athletics carnival, and it was a day of brilliant enthusiasm, spirit and certainly a lot of athletic talent. The chorus of cheering coming from the stands was just as incredible as the athleticism displayed. As a person who’s not particularly athletic, I was pretty awestruck by those who competed, you should be incredibly proud of yourselves.

This day would not have been possible if it weren’t for the help of all our amazing Abbotsleigh staff, who through great effort ensured that the day ran smoothly. A special thank you to Mr Bultitude and Mr Everingham, who had the enormous task of organising this whole event; it was definitely an extraordinary day for all of us.

A big thank you also to every student. Your cheering, energy and effort was inspiringly joyful and really made the day. I’m truly, very lucky to have been able to witness so much House spirit and unity, so thank you all!

Thank you to the wonderful House leaders who have dedicated so much time, effort and energy into their respective Houses. I am so proud of the way you’ve led with such passion, creativity and vivaciousness – you are all exceptionally brilliant human beings. Also, a massive thank you goes out to Year 12! You’re all unique bundles of energy and it’s been so brilliant to share in this last carnival together. Without all of you, this day would be nowhere near as happy or special.

Last but not least, an enormous thank you to Ms Webb and Mr Clark and Mr and Mrs Moore, parents of our Captains, for taking their time to present the ribbons.  Full results below.

NSW All Schools Diving

A selection of Abbotsleigh Senior School girls have been working towards qualifying through the school sport pathway with the aim of representing NSW at the Pacific School Games later this year.

The season began with the annual IGSSA diving competition held at Homebush in early Term 1, where Abbotsleigh was well represented by Madeleine Freeman, Arienna Grebert, Elizabeth Xerri, Lorna MacFarlane, Katharine Laithwaite and our school Diving Captain, Jocelyn Abbott. After much success, five of the six girls progressed through to the CIS championships where Arienna Grebert, Lorna MacFarlane and Jocelyn Abbott were selected to compete in the NSW All Schools Championships. This competition acts as the trial for the final and most prestigious event – the Pacific School Games to be held in South Australia at the end of the year. The top three placegetters in each age division are selected to advance, so a huge congratulations goes to Jocelyn Abbott on her selection to the Pacific School Games team! Sadly, Lorna MacFarlane and Arienna Grebert both missed selection by one place, coming in 4th in their age group.

Congratulations to all Abbotsleigh divers on a wonderful season and a special thank you to their coach Rebecca Manuel who dedicates so much of her time and expertise to helping our Abbotsleigh girls flourish in the pool. Full results below.

IGSSA Cross Country

At 5.45 am on a frosty Friday morning, the Abbotsleigh IGGSA cross country squad trekked out to Frensham for the annual IGSSA Cross Country Carnival. The day was filled with fun, laughter and lots of great spirit from all the girls as they egged their teammates on. In a field of 24 competing schools, many girls had very successful individual performances, and overall the Abbotsleigh team came a close 2nd to Pymble Ladies’ College.

There was a strong sense of unity within the team as everyone supported each other, lifting the performance of the squad’s results. A huge thank you goes out to our fantastic coaches, Jimbo, Hannah and Emily, who have been very dedicated towards the performances of the team. With Mrs Rennie and Mrs Krimmer out supporting the girls, it was wonderful day, with the girls’ hard work paying off.  Full results below.

Touch Football

We put together a Year 9/10 touch football team to play in the Parramatta regional gala day on Monday 15 May. They were undefeated during the day right up until the grand-final against Monte going down 1-4.
