On a handball high
Year 10 Abbotsleigh student Caitlin Oschadleus was selected to compete in the 2017 Australian Open Beach Handball Club Championships in Adelaide at Glenelg Beach in the last week of February, 2017.
Playing in the open mixed competition, mostly U17s, all of Caitlin’s team was from the Maroubra Beach Handball club, called the Maroubra Bluebottles.
“We as the junior team were called Jellyfish,” said Caitlin. “All of our senior teams made it to the final and our women’s won in a tight match with Queensland.”

Caitlin’s Jellyfish team placed 7th, winning their last game of the tournament in a shootout.
In total, the tournament organised by Handball Australia included 11 men's teams, 11 mixed teams and women's teams.
“We were so close to playing off for 5th and 6th where we lost the game we needed to win by one point in a shootout. It was such a great experience to play against, watch and meet Australian and New Zealand players and to be coached and supported by those same players. I was really happy with our result because it was the first time our team had played together and it was in opens. Throughout every game we improved immensely and ended up winning 3 out of our 8 games,” said Caitlin.
Congratulations to Caitlin on her achievement for competing in this national tournament.
