The ethos of the Upper School is focused on students taking responsibility for their actions and their learning and building an appreciation of the value of life long learning. A strong and experienced academic staff and an Upper School Pastoral Team address the needs of the more mature learners of the Senior School. Academic programs in the Upper School, consisting of Years 10, 11 and 12, are demanding and designed to encourage and support our students to achieve their best and strive for excellence at whatever level of study they may select.

The Upper School encourages a spirit of inquiry and the development of independent learning skills. The resources of the Senior Studies Building, the Library and specialist subject areas support the effective use of student study and preparation time with access to break out spaces and computers. Year 12 have the use of their own Common Room for leisure and work and take responsibility for effective use of their time. Staff support Upper School learning through both formal and informal tutorial time with the students. The school’s intranet “AbbNet Plus” provides very significant support through online services and open communication channels which give students access to both human and information services. This is particularly valuable for students preparing individual research projects and working with the higher order thinking demands of the senior syllabuses.

While we seek always to extend our Upper School students and encourage the pursuit of excellence our academic and pastoral programs place emphasis on the importance of achieving one’s personal best; of setting realistic goals; of building resilience to deal with inevitable setbacks and most importantly to maintain a healthy balance of activities.
