Miss Kathleen McCredie (1970 - 1987)

Miss McCredie was the first Abbotsleigh Old Girl to return as Headmistress. She was a pupil at Abbotsleigh from 1940 to 1945 and also a Prefect (1944-45). She graduated from Sydney University (BA) with a double "blue" in hockey and cricket.

Miss McCredie taught in both England and Canada and was the founding Headmistress of SCEGGS Wollongong (1955-70). In 1984 she was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for services to education.

During the years Miss McCredie was at Abbotsleigh facilities improved considerably. In 1971 new science laboratories and an extended library were opened. In 1972 six extra classrooms, a language laboratory and a beautiful Year 12 common room were added and in 1983 the Centenary Building was officially opened.

Miss McCredie guided Abbotsleigh through seventeen action packed years, including two major anniversaries, the 90th Birthday in 1975 and the Centenary in 1985. She remains in close contact with the school and frequently returns for functions in her capacity as an Abbotsleigh Old Girl.
