The School Motto

The Abbotsleigh Motto TEMPUS CELERIUS RADIO FUGIT reminds us that "Time flies faster than a weaver's shuttle". As the shuttle flies a pattern is woven, with the threads people, buildings and events. The pattern is Abbotsleigh as it continues to grow in complexity and richness each year.

The motto was given to the school by Miss Marian Clarke, whose family crest was a weaver's shuttle surrounded by the motto "Tempus fugit radio celerit", a form which was used by the school until 1924 when the ungrammatical Latin was changed to its present correct form.

The School Song: To Abbotsleigh

Tune: Thaxted (Gustav Holst)
Words: Robyn Claydon

To Abbotsleigh we raise our voice
In gratitude and praise
For all that she has stood for
Through many years and days
We think of those who've led her
We think of those who've shared
We think of those who've done their best
And the countless ones who've cared
We praise God for our heritage
For our School that's stood the test
And ask for strength and courage
To give her our best

To Abbotsleigh was written in 1975 for the school's ninetieth birthday by Mrs Robyn Claydon who was then Deputy Headmistress.

The School Lesson

Philippians 4:4-9

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let everyone know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen do; and the God of Peace will be with you.
