Rhythmic Gymnastics
Open program for girls Years 2–12
Rhythmic gymnastics is a sport that suits students wanting a fun, challenging and exciting experience. It combines dance and gymnastics in the manipulation of the following apparatus: ball, rope, ribbon, clubs and hoop. Rhythmic gymnastics facilitates the development of cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, self confidence and discipline while enhancing motor skill development and coordination.

Abbotsleigh’s rhythmic program is directed and coached by Miss Danielle Le Ray (Olympian 2000) and her team of qualified coaches. Those girls who choose to participate in rhythmic gymnastics beyond the IPSHA and IGSSA competitions are invited to join the Abbotsleigh Rhythmic Centre.

  • develops agility, coordination and self confidence

Taekwondo
Abbotsleigh girls Years 3–6; boys and girls Years 7–12
Taekwondo classes provide the opportunity for students to learn valuable skills and improve physical conditioning with realistic application for self defence.

Students discover the joys of movement and physical fitness and learn that self defence and self discipline are fun! Teaching rhythm and motor skills while enhancing strength, flexibility, balance and muscle tone is only one aspect of the program.

It is designed to promote individual success while building skills and positive attitudes that will remain with students throughout their lives.

Mixed ability classes are held in both the Junior and Senior School and students will have the opportunity to work their way through the ‘belt’ accreditation program.

Fencing
Abbotsleigh girls Years 5–12
Fencing, Europe’s original martial art, is an exciting, dynamic sport. Fencing combines agility and athleticism with technical skill and lightning fast tactical decision making — the sport is known as ‘physical chess’. Fencing is a workout for the mind, as well as for the body!

Fencing is one of the world’s oldest sports and is one of very few sports to have been included in every modern Olympics. But you don’t have to be an Olympian to enjoy it! The Abbotsleigh fencing program caters to all ages and levels — from nervous beginners and ‘social’ fencers to would-be world champions. Abbotsleigh has a rich tradition in fencing, having recently won team events at both State and National Schools Championships.
