Abbotsleigh girls Years 9–11
Do you love to eat good food? Would you love to learn how to create amazing meals? This exciting eight week cooking program is located in the kitchen at the Old Gym with all ingredients and equipment supplied.

Become an expert at knife handling, steaming, stewing, grilling, roasting, frying and baking. And not only will you be creating memorable dishes, you will be eating them too!

We are fortunate to have the very experienced and famous ‘cooking dads’ chef, Mr Ron Cohen, as ‘head chef’. Class sizes are limited to 8 students so get your enrolments in early.

Efficient Reading – Read faster, retain more and understand better
Girls and boys Years 9–11
This 4 week course aims to eliminate poor reading habits and improve all levels of reading ability – especially speed, comprehension and retention. Students will be shown how to:

  • read faster
  • improve comprehension
  • eliminate bad habits that slow their reading rate
  • approach reading tasks with more confidence and flexibility
  • improve their ability to remember important information.

The Advanced Reading Skills course is an action-packed learning experience with no extra homework. Personal tuition is provided by ICS instructors who use specialised equipment to consolidate theory with interesting exercises. Focus is on the student’s individual progress.

Mandarin
Girls and boys Years K–11*
Mandarin classes are offered for beginners to those with more experience with the language. Classes are conducted in both the Junior and Senior Schools through an innovative learning system developed by our experienced teacher, Mrs Ming Urwin. Lessons will incorporate listening, reading, writing, singing, role-playing and Chinese culture. Mrs Urwin’s bilingual approach to teaching Mandarin has proven to be very successful for younger and older children in the community.

* This does not include Abbotsleigh students in Years 5 & 6 as they will have Mandarin as part of their curriculum in 2009. Abbotsleigh students will be given priority.

Yoga
Abbotsleigh girls Years 7–12
Yoga is an ancient practice designed to bring harmony, balance and well being. It will:

  • increase strength and muscle tone
  • increase fitness, stamina and endurance
  • increase flexibility
  • increase energy and vitality
  • reduce stress, tension and anxiety
  • improve functioning of the internal organs
  • ensure a calmer more relaxed state of mind.

This program will focus on toning and strengthening of muscles, improved body awareness, concentration, developing confidence, visualisation and relaxation skills. A must for all studyweary students.

Oral Presentation Skills
Girls and boys Years 9–11
This program is designed to develop a student’s ability to make effective presentations for oral assessment. Increasingly, the school curriculum requires students to present oral assessments in class. The aim of this course is to enable each student to develop the necessary skills to deliver confident, effective and high impact presentations. The course will encourage the planning, organisation and delivery of effective oral presentations that meet the requirements of the Board of Studies’ syllabus. The program demands maximum participation from individual students and provides the opportunity to practise presentations, receive feedback and ultimately to present with confidence.

A maximum of 10 students to a group, course duration is six 2 hour lessons.

Interview Preparation & Makeup Technique
Abbotsleigh girls Years 9–11
This eight week workshop is designed to assist girls in creating their own style and to equip them with the skills necessary to make the transition from school to working life. The focus is on personal grooming and presentation, résumé presentation and interview techniques. Students will learn to present themselves professionally for the all important interviews they will face at School, university and college and with potential employers.

In this interactive and fun workshop girls will have the opportunity to experiment with makeup and receive tips and techniques on makeup application. The presenter, Tracy Becken, is a professional makeup artist with a career background in recruitment. Course outline:

Week 1 – résumé preparation
Week 2 – interview skills
Week 3 – skincare
Week 4 – how to apply fresh, funky makeup for your school formal
Week 5 – how to develop looks for the corporate and professional environment
Week 6 – how to create an evening look
Week 7 – analysis of suitability of participants’ own makeup
Week 8 – participants dress and present for a mock interview
