Abbotsleigh and Knox take great pleasure in co-hosting a four day holiday camp for children with physical and intellectual disabilities. This fun-filled camp will be held at Wheeldon House, Abbotsleigh from 10-13 December 2009.
We aim To provide a fun camp for children with disabilities at no cost to parents; to provide children with opportunities they may not otherwise experience; to offer respite care to families; and to offer our senior students an opportunity to learn through serving others.
Children We will accommodate 20 boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 15 who have intellectual and physical disabilities.
Companions We have taken great care to select the most appropriate and committed senior students to be companion carers. Each applicant submits a written application and resume. Interviews follow and successful applicants are trained in the various aspects of their role. Along with a roster of registered nurses and other health professionals, the companions are supported in their role by teaching staff from both schools.
Medical support Medical facilities will be available on-site and the school is very close to Hornsby Hospital and the SAN Hospital in Wahroonga. We have registered nurses on duty each shift and doctors on call 24 hours.
Parent feedback from the 2009 camp “As a child with special needs (but who considers himself very ’normal’), I find it difficult explaining to my son why he is unable to participate in mainstream activities like his brothers. Not only did ABBOX of Fun give him that opportunity but it also provided him with endless hours of fun and the chance to express himself without the stigma of being different.”
“Thank you so much for providing such a safe and happy environment for my daughter on the camp. She was so thrilled with her special time away from home and being cared for by very attentive and enthusiastic girls.”
An outline of the camp Activities include swimming, interactive music activities and craft, a visit to the Sydney Aquarium or similar, pony rides, special guest visitors and much, much more.
Sponsors The success of our camp is the result of the support of many generous people whose contributions and offers of help have been invaluable. We are particularly grateful to our major sponsor, The Sony Foundation, for its support and contribution of financial assistance. It has also generously shared its extensive experience in supporting camps for children with disabilities.
