AbbSearch is the research arm of Abbotsleigh, which supports high-level education research in schools. It focuses on methods of teaching and learning and behavioural patterns of students, with an emphasis on personal development and health. The School also supports research relating to school policy and/or practices, program evaluation and professional development.
AbbSearch provides opportunities for university researchers and tertiary students to engage in school-based research as part of their university requirements.
The AbbSearch Research and Ethics Committee considers and assesses all research activities conducted by external researchers, which involve the collection of primary data from members of the school community. Final approval is granted by the Headmistress.
Research based practices
The Abbotsleigh Research in Action team (ARIA) is a professional learning community comprised of dedicated educators from a range of subject areas across the school. Members work collaboratively to initiate, conduct and communicate action research that will enhance teaching and learning, from our youngest classes through to Year 12. The team has implemented many innovative and future focused programs including: Eat Smart – Better Eating for a Better Brain; Year 7 Information Technology and Information Literacy certificate for key skills across subject areas; formative evaluation of grouping strategies; monitoring increased access to IT; Socratic circles and critical thinking skills pedagogy; multi-disciplinary learning experiences; and research into the student experience. The Director of Research and Innovative Learning and the Head of Statistical Analysis support these action research initiatives.
