Students are encouraged to participate in various sporting programs in the Junior School, such as IPSHA Saturday sport, house carnivals, representative sport and other activities.
School based trials and carnivals are held during the year to give all girls the opportunity to participate in athletics, cross country, diving and swimming. Girls may also nominate for other major sports such as rhythmic and artistic gymnastics, equestrian and the Interschools Snowsports Championships. Other representative opportunities in basketball, cricket, football (soccer), hockey, netball, softball and tennis are offered throughout the year.
Abbotsleigh is part of the Independent Primary School Heads’ Association (IPSHA), which organises carnivals, major sports and Saturday competitions for Primary students (Years 4-6) to promote participation, sportsmanship and enjoyment. The focus is on skill development, team spirit and participation, irrespective of sporting ability.
IPSHA carnivals are held throughout the year for athletics, cross country, gymnastics and swimming and diving. Girls may then be selected to compete at NSW Combined Independent Schools (CIS), Primary School Sport Australia (PSSA) and School Sport Australia (SSA) levels.
IPSHA Saturday sport runs for all four terms, with a mix of activities available. Training sessions are held once a week. While sport is not compulsory, we encourage girls to participate regardless of previous experience or skill level.
