After much excitement and anticipation, a joyous celebration of music was held at the Opera House on Thursday 27 May to mark 125 years
of Abbotsleigh.
Abbotsleigh’s Jubilation Concert was an outstanding success in the majestic Concert Hall, and will be remembered for years to come.
The concert featured performances from a capella group The Idea of North, as well as a specially commissioned piece from Australian composer Dan Walker. Our talented student musicians teamed with our 1,200 voice choir – including all students from Years 5 to 12.
‘Since 1885 when Marian Clarke first opened the school, music has been an important part of Abbotsleigh and has woven its way into the very fabric of our educational programs,’ Headmistress Judith Poole said.
‘We enjoyed the talents of our musicians as they combined with our choir of 1,200 voices in an extravaganza of exceptional performances. The musical energy displayed was a demonstration of the commitment, enthusiasm and enjoyment our girls find through celebrating with music.’
The Idea of North, who performed twice on the night, have worked closely with students this year sharing their expertise of singing. Their contribution to the concert allowed the girls to experience deeper learning and appreciation of the use of voice.
The showcase piece, Jubilate Deo, written by Walker, followed the 'Jubilation' theme and was performed by the School’s orchestra and 1,200 voice choir.
For the finale, Jupiter from The Planets by Gustav Holst was played. Our School Song was written in 1975 for our 90th birthday and the tune was based on a section of this work.
The audience clapped and cheered in celebration as balloons and streamers fell from the top of the Concert Hall, signifying the end to a night of fabulous music and wishing Abbotsleigh well for the years ahead.
