On Thursday 21 October, Abbotsleigh celebrated its International Day ceremony – with guest speaker Mr Li Cunxin, author of
Mao’s Last Dancer.
‘This was our third International Day event and it was a spectacular assembly of diverse performances, colour, music, action and talent,’ Head of Senior School and Deputy Headmistress, Mrs Rosemary Abrahams, said.
The ceremony commenced with Years 5 and 6 singing the School Song in Chinese to honour Mr Li and to mark the School’s 125th year.
A parade of flags followed, representing the different nationalities of Abbotsleigh students, past and present.
The special assembly also featured an array of creative performances, showcasing the incredible talents of both students and staff. There was Spanish, French and African dancing, the Knox Scottish pipe band, Yiddish singing, German and Italian opera, recitals of Latin and Japanese, Chinese singing, Brazilian acrobatics and a colourful dragon train.
Mr Li spoke to the crowded hall with passion about his early life in Mao’s communist China and his journey to become one of the world’s leading ballet dancers.
‘Mr Li had a powerful message for the girls about following one’s passion, ensuring an awareness of the need for perseverance when the going gets tough, making the most of all opportunities presented and above all following one’s dream,’ Mrs Abrahams said.
‘Abbotsleigh girls were inspired by Mr Li’s tale, loyalty and passion. He received stupendous applause and we felt truly honoured and privileged when he said he does not visit many schools in his busy schedule.’
After the assembly concluded, students were treated to international lunches – from Chinese and Indian to Lebanese – and relaxed in the courtyard to reflect on the diverse performances from the day.
